Benjamin Pungowiyi is a lifetime subsistence provider from this experience he gained knowledge of the Bering Sea’s current patterns and ice conditions. He currently serves as Native Village of Savoonga Tribal Council President in Savoonga, Alaska, which is one of two villages on St. Lawrence Island.

Ben served and chaired several local and regional committees in the mid-90s. He is currently serving on the Kawerak Board’s Executive Committee.

In the educational field, he taught ivory carving for beginners in Bethel, Alaska at the Regional Alternative High School and the Kuskokwim University Campus in the early 2000s. Ben has had numerous invitations for exhibits in and out of the state.

Ben has served on the Alaska Army National Guard in 1977, while in service he received the Sergeant Major’s Leadership Award and while on the Combat Rifle Team earned the State Commendation Medal.

Ben volunteered for so many tasks for the improvement of his community. He volunteered as a mentor for the Bering Strait Youth Igalik Camp on several occasions from 2010-2017.
